Obama To Fully Equip Local Police With Military Gear By Banning Military Gear For Local Police
It was as good as sliced bread three years ago.
Now they don’t like it so much.
President Obama has banned the sale of some kinds of military equipment to local law enforcement agencies, following widespread criticism of a paramilitary-like response to riots in a St. Louis suburb last August.
“We’ve seen how militarized gear can sometimes give people a feeling like they’re an occupying force, as opposed to a force that’s part of the community that’s protecting them and serving them,” Obama said in a speech in Camden, N.J. Monday. He said military equipment can “alienate and intimidate local residents and may send the wrong message.” – USA Today
The local police departments, after three decades of being given military equipment, have tanks, MRAPS, M-16’s, grenade launchers, night vision goggles, drones… About the only things they don’t have are aircraft carriers with F-16’s.
So all is well now because Obama is going to take back all that military surplus stuff. The cops may now only have an empty revolver and Obama will keep the bullets in his desk until they need them.
Wait a minute. Don’t celebrate just yet…
Banned will be tracked armored vehicles, bayonets, grenade launchers, camouflage uniforms, and large-caliber weapons and ammunition.
“So we’re going to prohibit some equipment made for the battlefield that is not appropriate for local police departments,” Obama said. “There’s other equipment that may be needed in certain cases, but only with proper training.”
That equipment will be placed on a “controlled equipment list” that includes aircraft, wheeled tactical vehicles, mobile command-and-control units, battering rams and riot gear. – USA Today
OK, so the armored vehicles can’t have tracks because they’ll damage the roads, and that would make it more difficult for them to transport political dissenters to the joy camps. As for the bayonets, grenade launchers and large caliber weapons; they already have those. Remember; the police have been receiving military surplus since the 1990’s. And, the camouflage uniforms? They don’t need them. Who are the cops trying to hide from?
So, tanks are just fine if they have wheels instead of tracks, head and tail lights and rear view mirrors and you call it a personnel carrier, or a wheeled tactical vehicle. Aircraft are OK, so maybe they will get some F-16’s and Apache helicopters, because they need some way to fly over and bomb us.
But, the best part is…
That equipment will be placed on a “controlled equipment list”… To have access to that equipment, police departments must meet national policing standards, track their use and receive approval from the federal government before selling or transferring them.
Obama highlighted a wide range of administration initiatives to fight crime, improve police-community relations and improve transparency in policing. They include a White House data initiative to encourage local police departments to release more information about arrests and uses of force by police; guidelines for police use of body-worn cameras; and federal grants to help implement community policing strategies. – USA Today
The cops will have to meet Obama’s standards to have any “controlled equipment”. Remember this?
The police had to borrow high powered rifles from a gun shop (“controlled equipment”). Now imagine if the shopkeeper had to ask them if the department meets Bill Clinton’s national policing standards and received federal approval.
I don’t like them being militarized, but I also don’t like them being required to meet national standards for anything. They are not national or federal police. They are local police, and they need to only meet local standards. What’s next; international standards?
The second amendment says that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. A cop is just a man in a costume. If cops are people whose right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, why is the government infringing that right? I can understand Obama saying that he won’t give them the equipment, but he’s acting like a mafia boss saying they can’t got to the gun shop or army surplus store and buy whatever their community wants them to have. So, who’s next? Will they next be telling us that we need to meet national or international standards to own “controlled equipment”?
Obama has many great ideas on crime-fighting, improving police-community relations and improving transparency in policing. He’s going to make all the cops wear body cameras. He’s going to make them enter all their data into federal databases. He’s going to implement his national community policing strategies, and he’s going to let the federal government pay for it all.
He who pays the piper, picks the tune.
Is the tune going to be Amerikka, Über Alles?
